Strategic Foresight Meets Industrial Design
Strategic Foresight Meets Industrial Design
How do we design for a world that hasn’t arrived yet?
4CF The Futures Literacy Company had the distinct pleasure of contributing to an extraordinary international exchange at the Faculty of Design, Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Within the framework of the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme, we explored the vital intersection of strategic foresight and industrial design.
Design is no longer just about aesthetics or immediate utility; it is a tool for navigating uncertainty. By integrating foresight into the design process, we move beyond solving problems to anticipating shifts. Throughout the workshop, participants from across Europe engaged in:
- Future-oriented thinking: Challenging underlying assumptions about the next decade.
- Speculative experimentation: Using design to prototype potential scenarios.
- Collaborative synthesis: Bridging the gap between abstract strategic trends and tangible industrial solutions.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the organizers and fellow facilitators who made this multidisciplinary laboratory possible: Robert Pludra and Bronka de Sage (Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw) for their vision in orchestrating this complex, creative ecosystem; Kacper Nosarzewski (4CF); Sebastiano Cecarini (Poliarte Accademia di Design, Ancona); and Sebastian Zgutka (Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw).
The energy of the workshop was driven by a diverse group of students representing premier institutions across the continent: Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Czech Technical University in Prague, Elisava School of Design and Engineering, Estonian Academy of Arts, HOWEST University of Applied Sciences, Libera Accademia Belle Arti Brescia, Poliarte | Accademia di Design, and the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK).
Seeing these young designers embrace Futures Literacy confirms that the future of European industry is in capable, visionary hands. When we align the rigor of strategic foresight with the empathy of industrial design, we don’t just predict the future, we build it.
