A new Pew Research Center poll shows that Americans look with hope to artificial intelligence and its potential to improve everyday life and human abilities. What matters to respondents is how these technologies would be used, what the limitations would be and who would benefit or lose if certain innovations became widespread.
Caution resounds in respondents’ expressed views on artificial intelligence (AI) and human enhancement applications, often focusing on concerns about autonomy, unintended consequences and the scale of change these could mean for people and society. People believe that economic inequality could worsen with the development of AI, and that technologies such as facial recognition software could lead to greater surveillance of select groups in society.
