Collapse of lithium extraction: possible by 2025

Lithium is a critical metal in the production of galvanic cells, i.e. primary batteries. The available forecasts for its supply are highly divergent, with the most pessimistic pointing to the possible collapse of its extraction in 2025. Lithium “propels” the development of electric vehicles and, to some extent, the development of energy storage. It could, therefore, be described as “the element of the future”.

If a price increase – which has still not happened – does not contribute to increased lithium extraction, the supply of the metal could be shaken by 2025. Moreover, while significant, lithium resources may be insufficient when the energy transformation gains momentum and electric cars take over the roads. Stocks of lithium-containing minerals are already becoming a strategic resource.
