Anti-Dystopian Congress
Anti-Dystopian Congress
A great initiative is underway: the Anti-Dystopian Congress has been organised as part of the centennial celebrations of science fiction author Stanislaw Lem’s birthday. The motto is “Talking about a future that won’t suck”.
The premise: the future will be imperfect and chaotic, but we can make it better against all odds. The congress is curated by Isabella Hermann and will be accompanied by an online film programme (available for streaming) curated by German author and theorist Georg Seeßlen. The programme, entitled TOMORROW´S HUMAN – THE HUMAN IN TOMORROW´S WORLD, will focus on the notions of identity and diversity in the era of Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality. The selection will show that films labelled “Science Fiction” can be different than what we are used to: without spectacle bassed pop-mythology, fantasies of eternal struggle, destruction and apocalypse, without well-known everyday articles in futuristic disguise. Instead, we will be able to experience personal visions and transgressions, experimental ideas and forms, free thought and narration beyond the simple duality of utopia and dystopia. The future is an open space rather than just an extension of the present and its problems. The programme is about showing science fiction as a brave genre.”
The Congress is a regional project co-organised by the Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow, Prague and Riga branches of Goethe Institut.
