What Will AI Bring to the Energy Sector?

“Challenges of Existential Significance” – an article by Sebastian Medoń with commentary by Norbert Kołos from the Polish Society for Futures Studies and 4CF The Futures Literacy Company:
“AI is the greatest unknown of our time – it can both accelerate solutions and generate entirely new crises. In the energy sector, we are now facing not only technological challenges, but also fundamental questions about who will control the future – and at what cost.”
Artificial intelligence is increasingly rewriting the rules of the game – not just in business, but in one of the most critical pillars of the modern world: energy. But is it bringing only opportunities, or also global-scale threats?
According to the latest report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers – largely driven by AI – are projected to consume 945 TWh of electricity by 2030. That’s more than the current total consumption of Japan. And that’s just the beginning.
AI has two faces:
On one hand – massive energy consumption, which in the U.S. alone is expected to account for half of the increase in electricity demand over the coming years.
On the other – tremendous potential for optimizing power grids, accelerating the development of clean technologies, and breakthroughs in battery and solar innovation.
Challenges of Existential Significance
This is no exaggeration. We’re talking about fundamental issues:
- How do we balance AI’s energy appetite with the need for decarbonization?
- How can we harness AI to fight the climate crisis without simultaneously deepening it?
- Are we ready for what Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) might bring?
A Critical Moment
We are standing at a crossroads where political, regulatory, and investment decisions will determine the future of the energy sector – and of our planet. AI won’t wait. It’s up to us to decide how we will use it: as a catalyst for positive change or as the source of new crises. Conclusion? AI in energy isn’t just about technology. It’s a question about the future of civilization. Read the full article!
